I was 30 years old in January 1997 and 7 months pregnant. I fell twice very hard on my left leg in the 7th month of pregnancy. My left leg started to hurt
from top to bottom. There seemed to be no relief for the pain. Then I started not to sleep -the leg pain and nausea from the pregnancy were taking a
toll.
When I would go gynaecologist for regular pregnancy check up I complained of leg pain and lack of sleep . The doctor suggested Tylenol and that it was
likely sciatic nerve pain. The pain intensified and sleep was rare. Finally on February 3, I woke up with such severe leg pain , I decided it was time
to go to emegerency .
When I got there I was checked in to and it just so happened my water broke. At this point my leg pain was unbearable. I kept telling the nurses and doctors
but was told to calm down and walk around. Three hours later my son was born healthy.
When I was taken up to my hospital room my leg pain was intensifying and due to lack of sleep over the past 2 months I felt like I was going crazy. I begged
nurses and the resident doctor to help me, that something was wrong. I could not walk to get my son from the nursery. Finally, my mother screamed at the
nurses to help me. The nurse looked at my leg and quickly went to the phone to call the resident doctor.
During the ultrasound the technician left in panic and a some sort of code was called over the intercom. A massive blood clot DVT was in my groin area
and blood tests found factor V leiden . When I was released, home care came to give heparin injections for 10 days.. After that Coumadin was started.
The leg pain did not get better for 1 year. During that year I walked with a limp, was exhausted from the leg pain and the swelling did not go down.. The
emotional toll was hell. I suffered from depression and worried about dying all the time. I cried out of frustration from being in pain all the time and
not being able to take care of my son.
I was a different person and I missed the old me. It took several years for the pain to go away. My left is still a different size.
When I have my period , a cold , flu or overtired my leg pain comes back. I wish I had this web site back then . Being so ill I can tell you it was hell
but the best thing that ever happened to me. You see I appreciate life, and every day ordinary miracles. I just hope this can help someone else who is
having a hard time.
